New Space Theatre dome screen to come alive soon

KOLKATA: The new is ready at the Science City . Designed and installed by Astro-Tec Manufacturing of the US, the screen came alive last week when another American firm Christie Digital turned on the new projection system for the first time.

Six strategically placed will create a largerthan-life experience for cinemagoers when the Space Theatre is reopened to public early next year. The projectors will offer both 2D and 3D experience to the .

After screening movies non-stop for two decades and enthralling nearly 72 lakh viewers, the Space Theatre had shut for the upgrade last April . One in every four visitors watched a movie at the dome-shaped theatre. After the theatre shut, crowd pressure has increased at the Science Exploration Hall and Science on a Sphere.

?Work on transforming the Space Theatre is almost complete. The dome is up and the projection system has been installed. They are currently being tested. The acoustic insulation, chairs and carpets are being set up. We should be through with all the work by this month. We hope to relaunch the theatre in January,? said National Council for Science Museums director general A D Chaudhuri.

The Rs 20-crore project ? moving from 2D analogue to 3D digital ? was delayed by six months as the dome wall panelling and the air-conditioning system had to be dismantled to get the exact measurements for the new screen. ?We shall have eight shows a day, perhaps four in 2D. The mix may change according to the content and demand,? said Science City director Subhabrata Chaudhuri.
